Iraq has offered 12 reconstruction projects to international companies

(IDP) - As part of the Ministry of Industry’s programme to develop the sector and increase its capacity, Iraq has offered 12 projects to international companies. The projects are in cement, steel, petrochemicals, fertilisers, glass, paper, and automobiles. In a press conference, Minister Fawzy Al-Hariri said the foremost condition that must be met is guaranteeing the rights of the workers at these plants. This is the priority when coming to sign with a foreign investor. The Minster also detailed the estimated amounts required to revitalise each of the industrial plants.
The glass factory in Ramadi will need approximately US$50m, the petrochemicals production company will need approximately US$120m, the iron and steel company in Basra will need US$220m, and the four cement plants in west of Iraq, west of Mosul, Karbala, and Muthanna will need approximately US$360m. Al-Hariri also invited investments in the textile industry. The Minister stated that the investment period is between 10 and 20 years and that preference will be given to offers that best serve Iraq’s economic interests, the ministry, and the workers.

Ministry of Industry hopes to attract $750 in investment

(Azzaman) - The Ministry of Industry is seeking investors willing to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to modernize 12 major Iraqi industries. The investors, whether local or foreign, are required to submit comprehensive plans on how to rehabilitate these firms to make them competitive in the face of foreign imports.
In return for their investments, the entrepreneurs will have a share in the products for up to 20 years. According to Industry Minister Fawzi Hariri, the country hopes to attract $750 million in investments that will cover major industries such as cement, glass, steel and petrochemicals.
The investors will have to adhere to certain conditions, among them a pledge to improve the living standard of workers and raise quality of products. Hariri said the Glass Works Factory in the restive province of Ramadi is in need of at least $50 million to modernize. The country’s petrochemical complex in the southern city of Basra requires up to $120 million, he said. The complex was once one of the largest and technologically most advanced in the Middle East.

Iraq’s cement industry was in need of $360 million, Hariri said.
