U.S. military bombs entry bridge to Baghdad

Security
(AFP) - US warplanes dropped seven bombs on a bridge south of Baghdad allegedly used for smuggling weapons and militants into the Iraqi capital, the military said on Thursday. Four bombs of 2,000 pounds (907 kilograms) and three of 500 pounds were dropped on Sunday on an “improvised steel reinforced bridge inhibiting insurgent movement south of Baghdad,” the military said in a statement. It did not specify where the bridge was located.
The strike was part of Operation Marne Avalanche launched recently to target insurgent strongholds in Baghdad’s southern belts and in central provinces such as Babil, Karbala and Najaf. The operation aims to cut off weapons smuggling into Baghdad from the central and southern regions of Iraq. The military said the operation has so far resulted in the killing of five insurgents, the detention of 42 others and the discovery of a large weapons cache.
