Iraqi List confirms, al-Sadr denies, meeting

(Azzaman Newspaper) - Summary: Sadr Movement Parliament Member – Salih Al Agaily has denied the (recent) reports which claim that a meeting has occurred between (Sadr Movement leader) Muqtada Al Sadr and Ayad Allawi – the Iraqi List’s chief. Al Agaily also denies that any meeting occurred between: a Sadr Movement and a British (government) delegation in London.
Salih Al Agaily contacted this Newspaper by phone and declared, “These press reports are nothing but lies!” Recent press reports have stated… that according to Iraqi List sources… Ayad Allawi, the Iraqi List’s leader… met with Muqtada Al Sadr in Kufa (near Najaf). These (media) reports stated, “They (Al Sadr and Allawi) discussed the current political process (situation) in Iraq; especially, since the Sadr Movement’s Ministers have withdrawn from the Iraqi government. They also discussed other issues connected to: improving security, Iraq’s future, and whether there can be unity (cooperation) between the Iraqi List and the Sadr Movement.”
The (media) reports said, “Izzat Al Shabandar - an Iraqi List member, Hussein Darwish Al Adili, and people close to Muqtada Al Sadr participated in this meeting.” The (media) reports added, “Some Parliament Members have welcomed this step (talks between the two groups), which was initiated by Ayad Allawi… who wants to convince the Sadr Movement to join (or support) the new political front …which Allawi recently announced (establishing). The Shiite Alliance list has minimized the importance of this meeting of Al Sadr and Allawi.”
Al Agaily also denied the recent press reports which claimed, “A Sadr Movement delegation (in London) met with a British delegation which included British Parliament Members and British government (Cabinet/Administration) officials.” Al Agaily declared, “This meeting did not occur! Sadr Movement officials have not held any meetings with Occupation forces! …Not even with their Parliament Members or (any of) their (other) officials! We (the Sadr Movement) also do not have any agreements with them (the Occupation)!”
However, Al Agaily did say, “We (the Sadr Movement) have a good relationship with some of the Iraqi List’s members… And, we also do not have any problems with anyone else.”
