Iraqi List: Signs Of An Agreement Soon Between Allawi And The Sadr Movement

(Azzaman Newspaper) - 4 SEP - Iraqi List Parliament member, Hussam Al Azzawi said that Iraqi List leader, Ayad Allawi is continuing his negotiations with important blocs and Parliament members. Al Azawi added that these negotiations are with the Accord Front, the Iraqi National Dialogue Front, The Fadhila Party and the Sadr Movement.
Al Azzawi pointed out that there are some agreements with the Sadr Movement, but recent problems between the Sadr Movement and the government as well as with the American forces are making these conversations difficult. He also said the Iraqi List has been in contact with prominent people in the Shiite Alliance and many of them have shown cooperation and support for the national project of the Iraqi List.
About the Iraqi List’s leaders visit to Kurdistan, Al Azzawi said it was a successful visit with positive negotiations that will solve the political crisis in the country. Al Azzawi added, “The Iraqi List’s project to solve the current crisis, which Allawi has introduced to the Kurdish parties, was welcomed by these parties.” He said, “The two Kurdish Parties are an important side in the political domain and they are a number you cannot ignore, and in the end, they are close to the patriotic liberal national project.
On Saturday, Allawi ended his visit to Sulaymaniya where he met with President Jalal Talabani and other Kurdish officials. About the Iraqi List’s vision to solve the crisis Al Azzawi said, “The solution is in the patriotic conversations between the political blocs and to participate in decisions, and not to put aside others.”
He added, “The Iraqi List is not an enemy of the Prime Minister, Nuri Al Maliki. We have some notes on the nature and performance of the government which have led the country into more fighting and disputes.” About their withdrawal from the government, Al Azzawi said, “Our position is unwavering on our withdrawal because there are many reasons and disagreements.” Al Azzawi believes that the crisis will not end because the government is continuing in its ignoring of other’s opinions. The Iraqi List has suspended its ministers, but they have given them time to run their ministries.

Iraq dismayed by Ahmadinejad's comments

(Al-Sharqiyah television) - Two parliamentarians told Al-Sharqiyah television in August 28 interviews that they are dismayed by Iranian President Ahmadinejad's comments that Iran is ready to fill a power vacuum in Iraq. Ahmadinejad told reporters in Tehran on August 28: "I truly declare that the political power of the occupiers is on the decline, and the region will witness the emergence of a big power. We are ready to help restore security in the region through collective cooperation with our regional friends and Saudi Arabia," IRNA reported the same day.
Hasan al-Sunayd, a parliamentarian aligned with the Islamic Al-Da'wah Party, told Al-Sharqiyah that Iraq should not be used as a playground to settle scores between the United States and Iran. "Iraqi forces should achieve the required standard to fill the security vacuum.... We do not want Iranian or Saudi forces or any Arab, Islamic, or international forces to replace the U.S. forces. Iraqi forces will fill the security vacuum," he said.
Parliamentarian Usamah al-Nujayfi, a representative of the Iraqis List, told Al-Sharqiyah that he is convinced Iran began interfering in Iraq four years ago "and has infiltrated power circles and has a lot of leverage over the political and social situation in Iraq." He said Ahmadinejad's remarks are tantamount to an admission that Iran is interfering in Iraq.

Allawi’s Group Demands To Postpone Implementation Of Article 140

(Al Mashriq Newspaper) - 25 JUN - The Iraqi List, which is led by Ayad Allawi, has demanded the postponement of the implementation of Article 140 regarding Kirkuk. The Iraqi List also demands that Mahmoud Al Mashahdani remain as Parliament chief. The Iraqi List stated that forming a new political front that includes political entities from the current political process will help extricate Iraq from its current situation.
The Iraqi List has presented a suggestion to postpone the implementation of Article 140. Yesterday, the Iraqi List issued a statement that said, “The current circumstances are not stable enough for the implementation of this article because of the major changes that have occurred in Kirkuk since the war. This postponement would assist in providing stability and security.” The Iraqi List’s statement also requested the formation of a political board to draft standards and criteria for implementing Article 140.
On the other hand, Iraqi List Parliament member, Aaliya Al Ubaidi said, “The Iraqi List supports Mahmoud Al Mashahdani remaining as the Parliament chief because of his patriotic and nationalistic attitude, which is aligned with the Iraqi street’s beliefs. There is a general opinion in the Iraqi List that he remains in his position. The causes behind the attempts to remove him are all political and are being attempted in order that certain laws can then be passed. If we review the original incident involving Al Mashahdani’s bodyguards, this incident was fabricated for the purpose of removing Al Mashahdani because there is no mention of removing the Parliament chief in the constitution or in the Parliament’s internal procedures. Article 12 of the Iraqi Parliament Rules stated that the Parliament chief’s resignation should only be for a very serious reason but no one has presented any such reason in this case. The incident was related to security and had nothing to do with Al Mashahdani.”
Iraqi List Parliament member, Izzat Al Shabandar stated, “The Iraqi List believes forming a new political entity is a method of extricating Iraq from its current political crisis. The Iraqi List has presented this project to the political entities for discussion. The Iraqi List does not want to announce the formation of the entity before it is guaranteed to succeed. Therefore, the formation of this entity will remain under discussion. This political entity will be able to ‘melt’ the internal problems and stand against Iraq’s enemies who want chaos in this country. This front will help relax Iraq’s neighboring countries.”
Regarding the Iraqi List’s and KDP’s shared beliefs, Shabandar clarified, “The meetings continue with the KDP have continued on an uninterrupted basis. The most recent meeting with the Kurdish personalities in the new front was to clarify viewpoints.” It is worthy to mention that the Iraqi List has held meetings with a number of parties and political entities in Cairo in order to prepare for the announcement of the new front. Some Parliament members believe these meetings were part of a coup against the current government.

Allawi supporters demonstrate across Iraq

(RFE/RL) - Thousands of supporters of former Prime Minister Iyad Allawi demonstrated in the cities of Baghdad, Al-Basrah, Mosul, and Karbala on May 29 to protest allegations that Allawi is plotting to overthrow the Iraqi government, the London-based "Al-Sharq al-Awsat" reported on May 30. Critics of Allawi alleged that his foreign and regional tour was aimed at drumming up support for his return to power. The demonstrators reportedly called on Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki to resign.
A statement released by Allawi's office said the government's "conspiracy theory paranoia" has prevented it from effecting change on the ground, the daily reported. Meanwhile, Iraqis List parliamentarian Mahdi al-Hafiz said on May 29 that he will withdraw from the list, led by Allawi, citing a lack of transparency in the list's political work, "Al-Mashriq" reported on May 30. Ayham al-Samarra'i, who served as electricity minister in Allawi's interim government, told Al-Jazeera on May 27 that Allawi has won Arab states' support for his political vision, adding that while Iraq's neighbors "do not want a coup in Iraq, they want to see Iraq succeed."

Al-Hashimi met with Allawi about forming a new party

(Al Mashriq Newspaper AR.) - 28 MAY - Accord Front spokesman, Salim Al Jabouri, confirmed that there will soon be a new national front. He also confirmed that a few days ago VP Tariq Al Hashimi met with former PM, Ayad Allawi, the chief of the Iraqi List. They discussed creating a new front. Al Jabouri said to an Emirate newspaper that there are continuing communications with influential groups and parties, such as Fadhila Party, National Dialogue Front, and the Kurdish Coalition.
He added that there have been meetings with these groups and parties as well. He denied that these meetings area targeted at having a coup against the current government, rather, he described it as a democratic political activity targeted to create a new national front to represent the majority of Iraqis and be away from sectarianism. This new front will have patriotic programs and will serve all Iraqis. Finally, Al Hashimi stated in Amman yesterday that he has three choices: to dialog with the current government; withdraw from the current government; or create a new front.

Allawi Guarantees Arab And Regional Support For Coup Against Al Maliki

(Al Mada Newspaper) - 22 MAY - During a meeting of the Iraqi List in Jordan between the 17th and 19th of May, which was headed by Ayad Allawi and that was attended by Adnan Al Pachachi, Mahdi Al Hafidh, Ayad Jamal Al Din, Falah Al Naqib, Maysoun Al Damlouji, and others, Allawi demanded that his list’s members make the decision to withdraw from Al Maliki’s government promising them that there will be large regional support in many sectors.
Allawi adopted this position because of the political crisis in Iraq as well as because of the dominating political entity’s continuing of its sectarian agenda and its insistence to marginalize other entities from participating in the political process. Participants said that the meeting was devoted to discussing the political situation in Iraq which needs extraordinary steps. Sources said that Allawi confirmed that his political activities are supported by some Arab and regional countries, such as Jordan, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Libya, Egypt, Turkey, Yemen, and Syria.
The meeting also discussed the formation of a new political front to face the Iraqi situation and the inclusion of the National Dialogue Front in this new front as well as the inclusion of Khalaf Al Aliyan’s political entity. Information also states that there is an understanding with some members from Fadhila Party, the Sadr Movement, the Islamic Party, as well as some Kurds, “such as Arshad Zebari, who is well known as being one of Saddam’s mules.”
The meeting was also attended by the former Deputy PM, Abid Mutlak Al Jabouri. Leaders from the Iraqi List said that the meeting and side discussions were focused on mobilizing efforts to be utilized to dissolve the current political coalitions. Political sources in Amman expressed Allawi’s lack of confidence in the seriousness of the Islamic Party to take important steps toward this new political front. They also mentioned that Allawi is unsure of the Sadr Movement’s intentions regarding this new front.

The same participants confirmed that there is security and political coordination among these countries to develop assistance for Allawi’s plan.
Some observers say that the Iraqi List’s leadership is searching for any position in the government regardless of the higher national interest for Iraq.
Other observers, who are outside the government, believe that what is developing is intended to destroy the current political infrastructure in Iraq which confirms that if the current government wants to face this coup, it must take certain steps regarding the economic, political and security situations. The current government must also minimize sectarianism. These observers add that the government should also look toward open and secret dialogue with those in and outside of Iraq.

Iraqi List confirms, al-Sadr denies, meeting

(Azzaman Newspaper) - Summary: Sadr Movement Parliament Member – Salih Al Agaily has denied the (recent) reports which claim that a meeting has occurred between (Sadr Movement leader) Muqtada Al Sadr and Ayad Allawi – the Iraqi List’s chief. Al Agaily also denies that any meeting occurred between: a Sadr Movement and a British (government) delegation in London.
Salih Al Agaily contacted this Newspaper by phone and declared, “These press reports are nothing but lies!” Recent press reports have stated… that according to Iraqi List sources… Ayad Allawi, the Iraqi List’s leader… met with Muqtada Al Sadr in Kufa (near Najaf). These (media) reports stated, “They (Al Sadr and Allawi) discussed the current political process (situation) in Iraq; especially, since the Sadr Movement’s Ministers have withdrawn from the Iraqi government. They also discussed other issues connected to: improving security, Iraq’s future, and whether there can be unity (cooperation) between the Iraqi List and the Sadr Movement.”
The (media) reports said, “Izzat Al Shabandar - an Iraqi List member, Hussein Darwish Al Adili, and people close to Muqtada Al Sadr participated in this meeting.” The (media) reports added, “Some Parliament Members have welcomed this step (talks between the two groups), which was initiated by Ayad Allawi… who wants to convince the Sadr Movement to join (or support) the new political front …which Allawi recently announced (establishing). The Shiite Alliance list has minimized the importance of this meeting of Al Sadr and Allawi.”
